    Lab Results

Many times a patient comes in the office with what are considered completely normal lab results but they simply feel awful. Sometimes they are fatigued. Other times they are just in what they call a funk. There are many symptoms that they may have that can’t be explained by looking at the lab testing and the levels that are reported. In these cases functional health care practitioners are more and more looking at their levels utilizing functional ranges.

Functional blood chemistry is different than typical lab result ranges that are seen on lab testing forms. With Functional Medicine we will evaluate these numbers using functional ranges. Conventional ranges are based on a bell curve that represents 95 percent of the population. They can vary from lab to lab and region to region. A test can be normal but the patient may be symptomatic.

Functional ranges are geared at evaluation and analyzing lab results to reveal early stages of physical imbalance. They are narrowed to shoe more appropriate ranges for the population. We are also able to see imbalances in chemistry before sickness or pathology occurs. It is not dependent on a population sample but on what should be normal.

More and more I am utilizing these level in order to evaluate a patient. By using clinical nutrition we can change these levels in many circumstances to help the patient. We are not treating the patient’s levels but using clinical nutritional supplements to give the body what it needs so it can change the levels. In the past this was difficult with many patients that did not have insurance. But now I have negotiated prices with a local lab that not only enables us to order lab testing for a much more economical price for those without insurance.
