Lab Corner: Parasites

Every day in the office we order blood work. Often patients will bring previous blood work. In functional medicine we look at blood at healthy levels instead of lab levels. We want to identify a problem and support it nutritionally before it becomes more significant and effect the patients health. Many times blood comes in to the office or results we run ourselves and we see findings that are indicative of parasites. Many times these patients have been told their blood is normal.

High Eosinophils can be a sign that patients could have parasites. If that is the case and Monocytes and Basophils are also high then there is a good chance that parasites are involved. If this is the case further testing is needed to see if this is the case is indicated. If there are parasites then it is necessary to deal with them immediately.

Here are some risk factors for parasites: Risks will increase if you have house pets or work around farm animals. If you have been out of the country this increases risk. Patients with poor digestion are more likely to have parasites. Hypochlorhydria which means your PH in your gut is not acidic enough and parasites that are ingested will be more likely to cause problems. With a proper PH like 1.5 parasites as well as other organisms would be killed.

Some signs of parasite are Chronic Allergies, Dark Circles under eyes, Digestive problems, bloating, Skin disorders, weight problems and neurological problems. Nail biters, people with deep cough or teeth grinding are other symptoms.
